Paul “Auto’ Manuell grabbed his second win of the weekend in the PORTERGROUP V8 Utes at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park to make it two out of three and win the first round of the championship and the Ash Cairns Trophy.
The race proved to be another close run thing with three drivers – Manuell, Glen ‘Coyoute’ Collinson and reigning champion Richard ‘Danger’ Moore – lapping nose to tail for the ten lap finale.
It was Collinson took the lead off the start but it was points leader and pole position man Manuell who pulled the pass of the race on the DNA Paints Falcon FG driver, outbraking him for the lead into the final ‘Chase’ chicane section to take the race lead on lap 2. After that it was once again a nip and tuck affair, with never more than car length or two separating the pair, with Moore in hot pursuit in third.
Fourth on the grid, former champion Chris ‘Hammertime’ Hanley struggled to get his Placemakers Ford away for the third race in a row, but still somehow managed to emerge in fifth place out of the first turn, with Andrew ‘Hireman’ Porter having sneaked through to fourth. These two also enjoyed a race long battle, trading places and staying within site of the leaders throughout.
Alexandra ‘Skippy’ Whitley capped a very impressive debut weekedn in thre series with sixth lace and the best of the ‘newbies’ whilst Danny Stutterd took his best result of the weekend in 7th. Geoff ‘SOS’ Spencer took eighth in the Coresteel Buildings Holden with the Kernohans just beihind, with father Dave beating Jeff to the flag once again. Sam Filmore, Simon Ussher and Dave Lowe completed the field with DNFs for Conal Dempsey anf the unfortunate Jason ‘Mario’ Land, eliminated in another Turn 1 incident.
Results will remain provisional pending a review of the race.
