Current 24 Hours of Le Mans champion and Porsche LMP1 driver Brendon Hartley is being considered by the Toro Rosso Formula One team to drive in the United States F1 Grand Pix. Several news-sites have this morning reported that Hartley, along with Sebastien Buemi as a back-up option, are the leading contenders to fill the seat alongside Russian Daniil Kyvat.
The vacant seat has come about as Pierre Gasly will return to Super Formula in Japan to fight for the title in the series final on the same weekend.
Team principal Franz Tost is taking the opportunity to evaluate another driver with a view to his options for 2018.
Hartley has previously held the role of reserve driver for Red Bull in 2009 and 2010 as well as having a number of years as reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 team, spending a considerable amount of time in the team’s simulator.
It is understood that Hartley has also been in discussions with Chip Ganassi Racing with a view to driving in the IndyCar Series in 2018.
