Taylor Cockerton has finished three times on the podium at the second round of the 2017 Formula Masters Series. Despite gearbox issues restricting practice and qualifying, Cockerton was able to score three second places and a fifth driving for the Cebu Pacific Air by PRT Team at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.
Heading into the weekend, the Pukekohe driver was third overall on the points table behind Daniel Lu and Daniel Frost having scored a race win and two podiums at the opening round at Sepang in April.
“Saturday was a great day for the team, as we banked a lot of points,” commented Cockerton. “I started race one from eighth as we had an average qualifying on Friday with limited testing beforehand.
“I managed to get a good jump off the line and fight my way through to fifth by the end of the first lap. The car was super quick and I was catching my team-mate quickly. I managed to go around the outside of him at turn two and started chasing down third.
“By this stage I had moved into third place as the leader (Daniel Lu) had jumped the start, so was handed a drive thru penalty. I pressured second (Daniel Frost) into a mistake at the final corner and got past him, and ended up taking P2 for the first race.”
“In the second and shorter race I managed a good jump and was into P3 straight away. While Daniel Lu, the race leader, was able to drive away at the front, second place (Kurt Hill) was struggling so I spend most of the race trying to force him into a mistake. On the penultimate lap, I managed to pass him around the outside of the final corner, and we ended up with another P2 result.”
In Sunday’s two races Cockerton finished fifth and second.
“All in all, I’m pretty happy, considering our performance in qualifying. I think my race craft and ability to fight in a pack is one of my strengths over the field.”
The series now heads to Zhuhai in China for the third of five rounds 16-18 June 2017.
