The most stunning change to the landscape at Teretonga Park since the 1970s is about to be unveiled.
A new, state of the art, Control Tower is nearing completion at the popular motor racing circuit on the outskirts of Invercargill. The tower is yet another advancement that is bringing facilities at the 2.62 kilometre track up to international levels.
The new tower will consist of four levels and will house the services essential to run events at the circuit.
The top level of the new building will be the race control area while one floor down there is a media room, timing facilities and commentary area. The second floor incorporates an area suitable for functions and meetings while the ground floor is home to the race administration office and offices for race day officials such as competitor relations personnel, race management etc. There are also public toilets on the ground floor while all but the top level are fitted with toilets and kitchen type facilities for those using each area.
The new tower provides great views of the entire circuit while facilities are state of the art with a good level of comfort and functionality for users.
Donaldson Construction are the major contractors and they have made great progress to date. The weather throughout October and November has aided construction with not one day lost because of weather since the project began and work is on target and on budget.
Handover of the tower to the Southland Sports Car Club is scheduled for Thursday 23 December.
Funding for the project has come from the Invercargill Licensing Trust Foundation, the Community Trust Of Southland and the Southland Sports Car Club. Club labour was also instrumental in dismantling the old tower, the response to the call for workers at working bees such that not everyone could be accommodated.
The new Control Tower will be in operation when the Premier Summer Series meeting featuring the BNT V8s, the ENZED V8 Utes and other top motor racing classes come to Teretonga Park from 14-16 January.
