Support classes provide great racing

Great racing was provided by the support classes on Saturday at the BNT 200 held at Teretonga Park Raceway, Invercargill as part of the third round of the premier motorsport series.  While cold southerly rain certainly affected qualifying on Saturday morning the track dried out and the rain stayed away for racing in the afternoon.

In the Production GT class it was a race between Gary Duncan (Temuka) in a Mitsubishi Evo who won from Matt Dunn (Timaru) in a Toyota Corolla with Robert Ralston (Invercargill) in a Nissan 180Sk third.

Andre Heimgartner romped away with a win in the Formula Ford after a strong tussle with local Brendon Leitch in the opening quarter.  While Heimgartner took the lead from the start, Leitch overtook with a brave move around the outside of turn one to take the lead.  Henry Thomas-Kircher settled into third place and was ready to pounce on Leitch after Heimgartner took back the lead one lap later.  However Leitch took himself off the track at turn one on lap six and retired.

In the Sports GT the impressive Juno of Geoff Short (Hamilton) won from local Andrew Cundall (Toyota Levin) with Lawrence Knowler (Chev Camaro) third.  While Short initially took the lead he put two outside wheels on the grass coming out of the Elbow (turn 7) and Cundall took the opportunity to pass on the start/finish straight and held Short out until lap five, eventually finishing over five seconds behind the Juno.
