Powerbuilt Raceway intact

After the horrific damage to the city of Christchurch with the 6.3 earthquake that struck on Tuesday lunchtime the local motorsport circuit is intact with no damage.

Powerbuilt International Raceway is situated on the northwest side of the city approximately 15 km from the CBD.  This is in the opposite direction to where the epicentre of the quake was on the eastern side, in Lyttleton harbour.

The earthquake has caused considerably more damage to the region compared with a 7.1 earthquake last year on the 4th September.  That earthquake’s epicentre was much closer to the race track near Darfield and also caused no damage.

The CEO of the Canterbury Car Club Lloyd Proctor said that the track was fine and ready for use as soon as was appropriate.

A BEARS Sounds of Thunder meeting that was to be held this weekend was postponed by the organisers because local volunteers would be focused on higher priorities and also out of respect for what had taken place and the lives and families that the tragedy has impacted on.
