Owen Steel passes away

It is with sadness that we report the passing of Owen Steel, the well known and respected manager of Shell Racing here in N.Z. for many years. He supported many young and up-and-coming drivers over the years and the Steel Trophy was presented to many drivers early in their careers starting with Richard Lester in 1983.

Most years the Steel Trophy was awarded to Formula Ford or Formula Vee drivers like: Debbie Lester, Craig Baird, Mark Pedersen, Andrew Neale, Ashley Stitchbury, Jason Richards, Simon Wills, Scott Dixon, Jason Liefting, Chris Pither, Jonny Reid, Brendon Hartley, Shane van Gisbergen, Earl Bamber, Richie Stanaway and most recently Mitch Evans receiving this prestigious trophy. (to name a few of the more prominent ones)

His funeral will be held on Aucklands North Shore later in the week but in lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made to the North Shore Hospice, P.O. Box 33-1129, Takapuna, Auckland.

Cards can be sent to the home address: Steel family, 273A East Coast Bays Road, Mairangi Bay, Auckland 0630.
