Memories of Wigram Revived

Photo: Prendergast OSCAPhoto: Prendergast Historic OSCA Mk 11 Cortina

Motorsport fans, fasten your seatbelts for an absolute overdose of adrenalin filled action coming up at the Wigram Revival meeting at Powerbuilt Tools Raceway. Leading into Christchurch’s festival week celebrations, the 4th, 5th and 6th of November will see the fantastic F5000’s racing for the historically significant Lady Wigram Trophy. These big everything, late 60’s, early 70’s single seater race cars really do embody all that is emotive about motor racing, big slicks, big wings and big engines making their intentions very clear about their role in life.

The real bonus is that there is so much more to this meeting with OSCA celebrating their 40th Anniversary and includes a field of historic OSCA cars, some which have not seen the light of day for a decade or two. That 40 year history is steeped in tales of outrageous cars and even more outrageous drivers which sparked huge interest in motorsport in its early years.

Classic and Historic saloon interest will be lead by the Historic Touring car class of genuine and replicated examples of Group A and production touring cars from the mid eighties to the mid nineties, the sort of machinery that goes as good as they look, from the BMW stable of M3’s, 635csi’s and Super Tourers, XJS Jaguar, Sierra Cosworth, Holden Commodore, even the Telstars which Radisich drove with distinction around the circuits of Britain.

There will be a great line up of mainly 60’s and 70’s classic saloon cars that will excite with their close racing, as will the magnificent Mini 7’s and Pre 65 saloons which made their name on circuits like the Wigram Airfield. Even more aged examples of vintage race cars will sparkle in the sun as they stretch their legs down the main straight of Powerbuilt Raceway, allowing young and old to appreciate the exploits of both car and driver who raced in the early years of NZ motorsport.

Formula Libre includes sports and single seaters under 2.5 litre and this line up will cover several decades of Formula Ford and some very appealing, and very quick Atlantic and Tasman cars of the eighties.

A real attraction is in store for those interested in two wheels, with a large and varied range of classic and historic racing bikes…think BSA, Matchless, AJS, Triumph, even a Norton Commando will be facing the starters orders at the Wigram Revival.

A great weekend of motorsport guaranteed, showcasing the best range of historic and classic cars and bikes you are likely to have the privilege of seeing at one race meeting anywhere in NZ.
